Google Pay launched in Bangladesh for the first time
Google’s digital payment service ‘Google Pay’ has been officially launched in Bangladesh for the first time. City Bank PLC is launching this service in collaboration with Google, Mastercard and Visa.
The service was inaugurated by Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr. Ahsan H. Mansur at a function held at a hotel in the capital on Tuesday (June 24).
Charge d’Affaires of the US Embassy Tracy N. Jacobson and Vice Chairman of City Bank Hossain Khaled were present as special guests at the function.
Also present were City Bank Managing Director and CEO Masrur Arefin, Google Payments Group Product Manager Shammi Quddus, Mastercard Bangladesh Country Manager Mohammad Kamal, and Visa Bangladesh Country Manager Sabbir Ahmed, along with top officials from various organizations.
City Bank Managing Director Masrur Arefin said, “This partnership is a reflection of our commitment to building a future-oriented digital payment ecosystem in Bangladesh.”
It was announced at the event that City Bank is launching the service with the support of Google, MasterCard and Visa. They are making history as the first bank in the country to join Google Pay.
In the first phase, only City Bank MasterCard and Visa cardholders will be able to use Google Pay by adding their cards to Google Wallet. The range of services will be expanded further if other banks join in the future.
Using Google Pay, customers can make easy, fast and secure transactions by tapping their Android phone at any point-of-sale (POS) terminal in the country or abroad. This will eliminate the need to carry a separate card.
To use this service, customers must have an Android smartphone and download the Google Pay app and add their City Bank card. Then, they can pay at any store or restaurant with just a tap of their phone.
Google Pay does not charge any transaction fees and ensures the security of the information by using a ‘token’ instead of the customer’s card information.
