Hasina will have to go to jail if she returns: Chief Prosecutor

As ousted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been sentenced to death for crimes against humanity, she will be arrested and sent to jail as soon as she returns to the country, said Chief Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal Md. Aminul Islam.

He said this in response to a question from reporters at his office on Sunday (July 12).
In response to a question, the Chief Prosecutor said that the Bangladesh government has requested the Indian government to return Sheikh Hasina. Now the question is, if she is under the control of the Indian government, then there is no chance for her to come on her own. Either she will be handed over to the Bangladesh government under the extradition treaty or she will be pushed back.

And what Sheikh Hasina is saying (to Reuters) that she and her party leaders and activists will come together and surrender, there is no basis for this statement. Because she is not under his control now. She is not free or she is not in hiding.

The Chief Prosecutor also said, “We think his statement has no other reason than to somehow keep his leaders and activists in Bangladesh excited or to create an unstable environment.” Regarding the appeal after Sheikh Hasina’s death sentence, Aminul Islam said, “Section 21 of the International Crimes Tribunal Act has made it clear that there will be no appeal after 30 days.

If Sheikh Hasina is somehow brought to Bangladesh or is found in Bangladesh, then since there is a death sentence against her, she will first go to jail. After going to jail, the issue of whether she can appeal or not will be resolved. If there is no opportunity to appeal, the sentence will remain in force. If an appeal can be filed, then whatever happens will be subject to the resolution of the appeal.”
