Israeli woman raped in India, tourists flee in panic
A group of people went out star gazing or to see the stars in the night sky. Everything was going well. They were enjoying the night atmosphere by playing guitar and singing. Suddenly, everything changed because of three strangers on a motorcycle. First an argument, then an attack, and the rape and murder of two women, including an Israeli tourist, took place. As this incident has spread panic, at the same time, the safety of foreign tourists in India has once again come under question.
The incident took place in the Sanapur Lake area near Hampi in Karnataka, India. There have also been media reports that many foreign tourists have left the UNESCO heritage site in the last few days.
Many foreign tourists have canceled their bookings. Many have decided to change their previous travel plans and go elsewhere. Among those who were involved in the incident on Thursday night were a woman working as a local homestay operator, an Israeli woman, an American citizen, a resident of Maharashtra and a young man from Odisha.
Koppal Superintendent of Police Ram Arasiddi said that five people were attacked near Sanapur on March 6. Two of them were foreign tourists. The attackers beat up the men and sexually assaulted two women. Based on the complaints of the victims, a case of attempt to murder, theft and rape has been registered.
Police said that the American youth and another tourist from Maharashtra, who were allegedly pushed into the canal, are in good health. The body of the tourist, who was later recovered, is a resident of Odisha.
The US State Department said it was aware of the attack on the American citizen. The Karnataka police had earlier arrested two people in connection with the incident. Later, the police arrested another youth on Monday on suspicion of being involved in the incident. The Karnataka State Commission for Women has sought a report from the Superintendent of Police, Koppal, on the incident.
