Government has no plans to ban Awami League: Dr. Yunus

The interim government has no plans to ban the Awami League, said Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus. He said that the party leaders involved in murder and crimes against humanity will be brought to justice through the courts.

He said this at a meeting with a delegation of the International Crisis Group (ICG) led by Dr. Comfort Eero at the Jamuna State Guest House on Thursday (March 20).

The interim government head did not rule out the issue of putting Awami League leaders on trial through the International Crimes Tribunal in The Hague as recommended by the UN Fact-Finding Mission. He said, “This is also under discussion.”

Meanwhile, Professor Yunus also ruled out the issue of postponing the vote in the face of any demand. He said that the government is committed to holding the election on time. The Chief Advisor also highlighted two deadlines for the election. He assured that there will be no change in this deadline.

Explaining the matter, Professor Yunus said, if the political parties want minimal reforms, then the elections will be held in December this year. And if they want major reforms, then the elections can be held by June next year. We do not need to change the election date. The elections will be free and fair.

He also said that the National Consensus Commission started discussions with the political parties on Thursday. Through this, the July Charter will be prepared, which will later help the government adopt various policies.

At the meeting, ICG officials praised the government for the arrest of Ataullah, the leader of the Rohingya armed group. They said that this is a sign of the interim government’s commitment to peace and stability in the Rohingya camps.

At the same time, ICG officials also emphasized increasing communication with the Arakan Army, which is under the control of Myanmar’s Rakhine.

Dr. Comfort assured that he will stand by Bangladesh and the interim government against false information spread against it.

At that time, Professor Yunus said that Bangladesh wants to build strong relations with India, although most of the false information is coming from the country’s media.
