Italian national killed in planned way to embarrass Bangladesh: Benazir

Director General of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) Benazir Ahmed on Wednesday said the Italian national was killed in a planned way to embarrass the nation.

“We’re sure that the killing was carried out with a motive to embarrass the nation,” he told reports after visiting the place of occurrence in the city’s Gulshan area, UNB reports.

Italian national Cesare Tavella, 50, an official of the Netherlands-based non-governmental organisation ‘ICCO Cooperation’, was shot to death by some miscreants at the end of Road No-90 of the diplomatic zone on Monday night.

It was not an incident of mugging as the killers did not loot anything from the victim, the Rab boss said, adding, “But we’re working attaching importance to all the possibilities.”

About international reaction to the killing incident, Benazir Ahmed said it is not that it took place only in Bangladesh. “Such incidents also occur in other countries. The international community’s reaction to the killing is not expected.”

He, however, said the killing is in no way expected. “It’s very much pathetic.”

The elite force is investigating the killing of the Italian national as part of the shadow probe to assist the Detective Branch of police, the Rab chief said.

He also said they are engaging their all-out efforts to unearth the mystery behind the murder.
