Army personnel are not being removed from the field

The 50 percent of the Bangladesh Army members responsible for controlling the law and order situation are not being removed from the field, said Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, the Home Affairs Advisor to the interim government.

The advisor gave this information in response to a question from reporters after the meeting of the Core Committee on Law and Order in the meeting room of the Home Ministry at the Secretariat on Sunday (November 9) afternoon.

He said, “At the moment, the army will remain as it was before. They are not being removed.”

When asked about the security surrounding the Dhaka lockdown program announced by the Awami League on November 13, the Home Affairs Advisor said, “There is no fear.”

On November 5, news was published in the media that half of the members of the army would be temporarily removed for rest and election-time training. When asked about this at a press conference held at the army headquarters on the same day, Brigadier General Dewan Mohammad Manzur Hossain, Director of the Military Operations Directorate (MOD), said, “We have received the letter regarding the withdrawal and accordingly we will take necessary action keeping in mind the law and order situation.” The army officer said that for the last 15 months, the Bangladesh Army has been assisting the civilian administration in maintaining law and order. In addition, operations are underway to recover stolen weapons and ammunition and arrest identified criminals.
