We can’t talk, that’s the truth: Rahul Gandhi after detention
The country’s police have detained several leaders, including Indian opposition leader and former president of the Indian National Congress Rahul Gandhi and Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi.
They were detained along with other leaders during a protest in the capital Delhi on allegations of collusion between the Election Commission and the BJP. After their detention, Rahul Gandhi said, “We cannot speak, that is the truth.”
According to the BBC, several leaders, including the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi, have been detained by the Delhi Police. They were marching from Parliament to the Election Commission office.
Earlier, the police had stopped them by barricading them near the Paribahan Bhavan, where opposition MPs stood and chanted slogans. At that time, some people, including Rahul Gandhi, were detained.
After their detention, Rahul Gandhi said, “Actually, we cannot speak, that is the truth. This fight is not political. This is a fight to save the Constitution. This is a fight of one person, one vote. So we want a clean voter list.”
Many opposition MPs including Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, Dimple Yadav, Mahua Majhi, Sanjay Raut, Randeep Surjewala and KC Venugopal participated in the protest.
Meanwhile, at least two MPs from West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s political party Trinamool Congress who participated in the protest lost consciousness. Later, Rahul Gandhi and other MPs came to their aid and took them to the hospital in a car.
According to a report by the country’s media India Today, the police stopped the protest march led by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi from the Parliament building area in Delhi towards the Election Commission midway. At that time, some opposition MPs and SP chief Akhilesh Yadav, who participated in the protest, tried to climb the police barricade and move forward.
During this, the protesters raised various slogans against the Modi government, including ‘Vote chor, Gadi chor’. Later, during the scuffle with the police and the sit-in, two Trinamool Congress MPs, Mahua Moitra and Mitali Bagh, fell unconscious.
The MPs participating in the protest tried to revive them with water and first aid. Mitali Bagh was later taken to the hospital.
