Mother gives birth to six babies at a time, four die
Chittagong: A woman gave birth to six babies at a time just into 24 weeks of her pregnancy in the port city on Saturday.
However, four of the sextuplets died within an hour of the premature delivery at Jemison Red Crescent Maternity Hospital in the city’s Anderkilla area.
Rafia Anwar, 28, from Chataknagar village of Fatikchhari upazila, went into labour on Saturday morning and was admitted to the hospital at around 7:30am.
Rafia gave birth to one son and five daughters weighing unusual 500 to 600 grams each. Having very low birth weight, four of the babies, including the son died within an hour of the miscarriage, hospital sources said.
The survivors—two baby girls—-were sent to the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit at Chittagong Medical College Hospital. The mother was undergoing treatment at the same hospital.
“The six months pregnant mother started giving birth to six children through normal delivery at around 10:15am,” said Chief Medical Officer and Gynae Consultant Dr Rubi Dutta of the hospital.
Lack of necessary check-ups and maternal care might have caused the premature delivery and low birth weight, doctors said.
Rafia also has a three-year old daughter with her husband Moulana Md Yakub who is an expatriate in Abu Dhabi.
