Jamaat-Shibir men out to create unrest

Activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir are desperately trying to create unrest in the country to thwart the execution of death penalty of their leaders, including Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mojaheed, convicted of war crimes.
After a lull of some days, most of the Jamaat-Shibir activists who went into hiding in the face of massive crackdown by the law enforcers have reportedly started returning and reorganising themselves to stimulate more trouble in the capital and elsewhere in the country.
As the time of execution of court verdicts comes nearer, activists of Jamaat and Shibir have turned violent and are reportedly preparing for committing subversive acts in the capital and elsewhere in the country, intelligence sources said.
Jamaat and Shibir activists may become more desperate, they said.
They said more bloody clashes may take place between the law enforcers and Jamaat-Shibir activists in the capital and other parts of the country over the execution of death sentences of their leaders, including Mojaheed.
On Friday, police arrested 15 Jamaat-Shibir activists from different parts of Faridpur district, the home town of Jamaat leader Mojaheed.
Additional superintendent of police in Faridpur Kamruzzaman said police arrested the Jamaat-Shibir activists as they were preparing for committing subversive acts in Faridpur town.
Besides, police arrested five Shibir men from the capital’s Khilgaon area on Friday. The police team also recovered five cocktails and some explosives from their procession. Police said the arrestees were holding a secret meeting to carry out subversive acts.
Following announcement of death penalty against Delwar Hossain Sayeedi in first phase, Jamaat-Shibir activists took to the streets and got involved in bloody clashes with law enforcers at different parts of the country in which at least 150 people were killed and score others wounded.
The Jamaat-Shibir men took to the streets, started vandalism, arson and attacking law enforcers at different parts in the country, including Dhaka, Rajshahi, Dinajpur, Bogra and Chittagong that left at least eight police men killed and more than 300 others injured.
Tight security measures have been taken in the capital to maintain law and order, RAB media wing director Commander Mufti Mahmud said.
As part of security measures, police and RAB personnel were seen searching suspected motor vehicles and people at different points in the capital on Friday afternoon.
Besides, law enforcers continued massive raids at all suspected hideouts, including slums, drug spots and residential hotels.
Simultaneously, security was beefed up in the city’s diplomatic zones — Gulshan-Banani-Baridhara — to avoid any untoward incident.
Besides, security has been tightened in the city’s entry and exit points, including Kamalapur Railway station, Sadar Ghat Launch terminal, Gabtali, Saidabad, Mohakhali and Gulistan bus terminals, secretariat, Minto road and High court areas.
When contacted, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Asaduzzaman Miah said generally security measures always remain tightened in the capital. Recently, several criminal incidents took part in the capital.
Miscreants killed an Italian citizen, a blogger and an on-duty policeman, and wounded three others.
