Slum dwellers to get low-cost flats soon: Eng Mosharaf

Housing and Public Works Minister Engineer Mosharaf Hossain today said the government would allocate 450-square meter flats among slum dwellers in the capital and they will be owners of those within 20 years by depositing daily installments of Taka 275.

 

“National Housing Authority (NHA) had already constructed 2,000 flats at Mirpur in the capital for rehabilitating slum dwellers,” he told the inaugural function of a seminar on “Housing for city poor: problem, possibility and what to be done” at BRAC center as the chief guest organized by Urban Forum.

 

The government had a plan for expanding slum dwellers’ rehabilitation programme to improve their living standards and slums would be removed from the city in phases.

 

The minister said 40,000 more flats would be constructed for low and middle income groups in city’s Mirpur area.

 

As part of the government plan, he said, the NHA is constructing multistoried building adjacent to the capital for ensuring housing for homeless people.

 

State Minister for Finance and Planning MA Mannan, UNDP Country Director Poulin Tamesis, Urban Forum Advisor Abu Alam Shahid Khan addressed the seminar with Housing and Public Works Secretary Mohammad Mieen Uddin Abdullah in the chair.

 

Professor Shahidul Amin, Department of Architecture, BUET, presented a keynote paper on “housing for poor people”.
