Sonia to continue as Congress president
Sonia Ghandhi will remain as Congress president for one year.
The Congress Working Committee (CWC) today extended the term of party president Sonia Gandhi by another year. Rahul Ghandhi will continue as parties vice president for some more time, reports BSS.
The party’s highest decision-making body also extended the date of completion of the organisational elections, which were scheduled to be over by December 31 and will now be completed by the end of next year.
A meeting of CWC took place, and on the agenda, apart from the routine and mundane political stock taking, the resolution on her extension was passed.
Earlier in the day, Congress President Sonia Gandhi lashed out at the Bharatiya Janata Party led NDA Government on various issues at the Congress Working Committee meeting. The polls have been delayed as Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi is keen to hold internal elections across all the rungs of the party.
The party also had to extend its nationwide membership drive four times since it was launched on October 16 last year.
Sonia Gandhi was re-elected as the Congress president for a record fourth time in a row on September 3, 2010. At its December 2010 plenary in Delhi, the party had increased the term of its president from three to five years.
The meeting also discussed some amendments – uniform membership across all the wings of the organisation and reducing the tenure of Congress president from five to three years — in the party constitution.
