Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday asked the Awami League and Bangladesh Chhatra League to root out weeds from their organisations and build them in line with the ideals of Bangabandhu.
“I call upon the Awami League and Chhatra League to wipe out the weeds, if any, and prepare themselves as true follower of
Bangabandhu,” she said.
“Let the people who are involved in our politics move forward being imbued with the ideals of Bangabandhu,” Hasina told a programme marking the 40th death anniversary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Bangamata Fazilatunnessa Mujib.
BCL, the student wing of the ruling Awami League, organised the programme at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre in the capital.
Quoting from a write-up of Bangabandhu, Hasina, also the president of the ruling party, said, “As the land of the country is very fertile, seeds sprout easily. Weeds also grow and they harm the good plants.”
“These weeds actually invite the disaster. So, they should be wiped out to ensure that good plants grow up properly,” she said, asking the BCL activists to earn people’s confidence, trust and love.
The prime minister also asked the BCL leaders and activists to remain alert so that none could play drakes and ducks with the fate of the countrymen.
“The agents of the defeated forces are still active,” she said.
About BNP chairperson’s birthday celebration on the National Mourning Day, Hasina said she (Khaleda) was an agent of the defeated forces as she was with them during the Liberation War.
“Their defeat has upset her (Khaleda). That’s why she celebrates her fake birthday to show that she still supports the defeated forces,“ the PM said, adding that they (BNP) actually do not believe in independence.
About the assassination of Bangabandhu, she said the attack was carried out to destroy the spirit of the liberation war.
She also termed BNP founder Ziaur Rahman as a traitor. “He stopped the trial of the killers of Bangabandhu. He rewarded all the killers and violated the rights of the people,” she added.
The prime minister became emotional while recalling the horror of August 15, 1975.
Portraying the glorious activities of Bangabandhu, she said, “I think Bangabandhu is the only leader in the world who resigned from the cabinet for the sake of the organisation.”
AL leaders, including general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam, Sultana Shafi and Fakhrul Imam, also addressed the programme, with BCL president Saifur Rahman Sohag in the chair.
