Flood brings misery to several lakhs of people

As flood situation in different parts of the country has continued to worsen, it has brought misery to several lakhs of people in mainly northern region damaging houses, crops and property, local people and officials said.

Flood situation in different northern districts including Gaibandha, Bogra, Sirajganj districts has continued to deteriorate as well as central parts — Manikganj, Rajbari, Munshiganj and Shariatpur districts as the Bramaputra and the Jamuna rivers have burst their banks due to onrush of rain waters from Indian states of Assam and Meghalay, an official of Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre(FFWC) told, reports BSS.

The swollen Jamuna and Bramaputra rivers are likely to deteriorate flood situation in northern and central parts of the country during next 48 hours, assistant engineer of FFWC Sarder Uday Raihan said.

“We are forecasting that flood situation across the country will start to improve after two or three days,” he added.

According to a FFWC bulletin, flood situation in the north-eastern districts may improve due to the falling trend of water levels in major rivers of the district.

Water levels in 37 river stations monitored by Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) have marked rises and 43 stations recorded falls.

Among the 85 monitored water level stations, three river stations have been registered steady while 23 stations have been recorded flowing above danger level, a bulletin issued by FFWC said here today.

In Bogra, the overall flood situation in the district worsened further leaving nearly 1.5 lakh people marooned as the water level in the Jamuna river has continued to rise.

Due to onrush of waters from the upstream and continuous rainfall, the water level of the Jamuna and the Bangali rivers have been flowing above the danger level and have flooded fresh areas of the district damaging standing crops and arable land.

A large number of ponds and water bodies were flooded meaning farmers counted huge losses over fish productions. Classes of many schools and colleges have been suspended, local people added.
