15 injured in cop-student clash in Dhaka
At least 15 persons were injured and several shot while a clash was ensued between police and students of East West University on Wednesday afternoon during a demonstration against imposed VAT on private universities.
University’s additional registrar, East West’s Vice-Chancellor Ahmed Shafee was among the rubber bullets injured.
According to the sources, over a hundred students of the institution took to the streets and blocked the Badda-Rampura road around 1:30pm this afternoon protesting the 7.5 percent VAT slapped on private universities’ tuition fees.
Police officials said that the students blockaded the Badda-Rampura road in Dhaka for about half-an-hour. They hurled brickbats when police tried to remove them from the road. Later, police successfully took control of the situation.
The university’s vice-chancellor termed the police firing on students “unfortunate”.
The injured were taking treatments at a local Farazy Hospital when last reported.
The government slapped 7.5 percent VAT for private universities in the latest budget. The decision drew widespread criticism among the students and guardians.
Students of several private universities have demonstrated against the move. The High Court has been moved against the government’s “discriminatory” action.
