As we step into the year 2022, we are imbued with hope that darkness cannot and never will prevail over light, and that the darkness of the Covid-19 pandemic shall pass as well.
In the bygone year, the whole world had a rollercoaster ride due to the coronavirus pandemic. But in the face of the ominous pandemic, which at one stage had brought the whole world to its knees, science prevailed!
As a result we have already a number of Covid-19 vaccines and oral medicines which can protect us from the virus. Although a new corona variant is spreading fast at the moment, we are armed with vaccines, medicines and experience to counter it.
Amid the pandemic hit years of 2020-21, what makes us optimistic about a better future is that Bangladesh turned out to be one of the most resilient nations both in terms keeping the deadly virus under control and managing the economy well.
There is no denying that the people and the economy suffered badly because of Covid-19, but as a nation we fared better than most countries in limiting fatalities, vaccinating the people, and keeping the wheels of development works and the economy in motion.
The 2021 was also a momentous and eventful year for us because in this year we celebrated the birth centenary of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and golden jubilee of our independence.
We have also achieved 100 percent electricity coverage in this year, while Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina awarded over one lakh homes to homeless people, and a resolution was passed at the UN to graduate Bangladesh from LDC to a developing country category.
In politics too the country experienced a spell of fair weather because there was no widespread political turmoil. Barring some stray clashes in local government elections, the overall political atmosphere was normal.
But a spate of accidents on roads and river routes, rape incidents, and demise of a good number of luminaries due to Covid-19 presented us with shockwaves in repeated intervals.
However, as the new sun of a New Year rises, we focus on the sunny side of life, and wish a very happy New Year to all of our contributors, readers, patrons and advertisers.
